Text messages conversations are a two way street. One person goes. Then the other. Then the first person goes again. Then the second. It’s kind of silly how much we’re expected to play by the rules like this, but nonetheless so many of us find it totally weird when someone goes outside of this context. So when someone goes off script and sends two texts in a row (or more!) it makes that person look really weird.

There are exceptions to the rule that include:

1. Any emergencies.
2. Really long texts that need to be made into two.
3. Confirming details for meeting up.
4. Overhearing something hilarious that you have to share (see #1).
5. Over a week has passed without any communication.

If one of these situations does not apply to you, by sending more than one text in a row you will probably just look like a creep. It’s not fair, it’s awkward, and it seems arbitrary, but it’s all part of the mating dance that modern dating is.

Be patient. Right, the way most of us talk about relationships it sounds like gyys are supposed to pursue the girl. But unlike chasing your dreams to go to college, being an athlete, or a famous writer, when it comes to going after girls there is a big difference between being persistent and being pestering.

So slow down and find someone else to text in the meantime.
