Breaking Down “Bros Before Hoes”

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Some idiots dudes are always shouting the motto, “Bros before hoes.” If you and your friends are referring to your girlfriends as a “hoes” you definitely need more help then this one article. But this phrase is heard everywhere when you’re a guy, so maybe there is something to it. Let’s break it down and see what’s worth keeping about this sense of bro-to-bro unity and what we can ditch.

Keep: Your friends usually outlast your girlfriend.

The friends you make in high school often stick around through thick and thin well into the rest of your life. And even if the name of the site does reference the idea of “staying hooked” with a girl you like, most high school sweethearts don’t last all that long. When thinking about priorities you can’t let your friends fall on this list.

Ditch: Disrespecting whom you’re dating.

The whole “hoes” part of “bros before hoes” suggests that your friends don’t need to respect your relationship choices nor the girls you choose to date. Neither of these things are okay.

Keep: Don’t get obsessed.

It’s easy to become consumed by your passion for a new girlfriend. She means a lot to you. She makes you feel things. You like being around her. But there are still other parts of your life that you have to pay attention to.

Ditch: Ignore your girlfriend when you need to.

Just because you are trying not to lose face with your guy friends or show them you can still hang doesn’t mean when they call for it you can totally forget the fact that she is a human being you like and are attracted to and you care about how she feels.

Keep: You are bonded to your bros.

There is something sacred in the friendship between dudes. You have to be mindful of this. They will be there for you when you need it if you are for them. You can’t let girls or one in particular get between that fact.

Ditch: The phrase “bros before hoes” altogether.
